So how tough is tough? Does anyone have a Strava route I could take a look at?

Al

The route changes every year but essentially it's over the area,

I rode it last year doing the short course and recorded it on Strava but not sure what you need to see
hope the below helps.

Re:

Top pic was 2017 ...very warm, ground hard - came back dusty and thirsty

bottom Pic 2016 and speaks for itself....

its all down to lady luck as to what the weather does the week before, and even then everyone does the first 25-30km before splitting, only then do you need to make your mind up

Would a crosser be adequate for this or does it get nadgery?

There are a lot of people who do this on a cx bike, including youngsters in clubs, which is good to see.

If I had a cx bike, I'd still do it on an mtb though.

OK worth knowing cheers.

Done the Mary Towneley loop on both; CXer is faster than the 26" (obviously) but not as comfy. Another weather watch I suppose.

in 2016 the guys on CX bikes pushed a lot or were on the deck, and in 2017 they fooked off never to be seen again leaving the retard on an Antique 26' wheeler along way behind.

As you can see in the stava pic above its a lumpy course and whilst the water runs off the hills nicely the Valleys do get slippy, however if it was easy I doubt many folk would turn up.
