You'd be surprised how effectitve they actually are; back in the Jurassic Period I come from virtually all road bikes came with guards like that, alloy if you were lucky...
...whilst my motivation with the cro-mega is more form over function, the front does keep the worst of the crap out of your eyes and the rear stops you getting the embarrassing type of wet arse that makes you look incontinent!
