Headset Press

Try these I find they work well and unlike some of the specialist tools they're not fussy about the size of headset you're trying to fit

word up. i did this for a recent build, but im in the mood for something more mechanical and less primeval! (no offence) :? :D

If your using thread rod, use something quite think otherwise it could flex and allow the headset to go in at an angle.
Also use something between the metal washer and cups to prevent scratches etc.

A length of 1cm all thread, two lock nuts and two pieces of hardwood (with 1cm holes drilled through) is what I've used for several years now. Cost about £1.50 in materials from Wickes.

I made one very similar to the one in the link but used 12mm ply and 10mm threaded stud to avoid any flexing. I also glued some rubber gasket material to the ply face that comes into contact with the headset cups to avoid any scratches etc. Works great every time and cost me about 2 quid :D

yes (I wouldn't buy locking nuts, too hard to turn and not really needed)

In wickes you need to buy in the pack sizes - go to a proper hardware store (there aren't many left) and you can buy them individually.

I tried locking nuts and standard nuts and found that a locking nut on the bottom worked really well as it gave you something to turn against all the way down the thread.

I picked one of these up for the princely sum of...
