Headset Press

I bought a home-made one off Ebay. Works very well. Surely buying the bits would work out more expensive. They sell threaded bar in minimum lengths and washes / bolts in packets of at least 10. Unless you want to make extra ones with the left over bits and sell them on.

Depends where you buy them.
Places like B&Q, Focus etc, yes.

But if you can find a good fastener shop / warehouse you can buy what you want.
I made two similar press's (but bigger) for suspension bushes on a VW.
2x long M20 bolts, 10x washers, 4x 5cmx5cmx4mm washers and a few nuts for well under £5.

Francis Kirk in east Manchester is very good.

I got a Cyclus press from wiggle: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cyclus-headset-press/ though it was ~£25, not the £35 now. A most satisfying tool to use.

Home made tools are fine - I still have a large adjustable spanner my grandfather made. That press on eBay is no more than that - may as well make your own and save even more.

Ditto, I too have a Cyclus and it works well on everything. If going he homemade route use the biggest diameter bolt you can fit into a 1" headtube. It will last you longer.

I've been lucky,my latest frame is so loose the cups slip in without the need to press.

Why skimp? The number of frames we go through over the years. Just buy a decent pro quality tool, look after it and will still be doing its job for decades to come.
Problem with these home made things is that they rarely push the cups in square. And that my friends is a brilliant way to crack a head tube.

Yep you could easily make one of those for for less.
My home made headset press utilises a few strategically selected socket wrenches along with the threaded bar, nuts and big washers.

It works very well indeed.

Glad to hear it ;)

Cheers Al. The threaded bar, nuts and washers you gave me have been modified into this:

The additional socket wrench in the centre fits the inside of 1 1/8ths headset cups perfectly and ensures that the cup goes square into the frame.

If I need to fit a 1" or 1 1/4" headset I can just use a different sized socket for the central sleeve.

I should've made one of these years ago.
