Inherently there are no unusual forces acting on the frame, if there were it would ride strangely and that misses the point.

Not being thick - yes, the hub with press-fitted bearings bolts onto a tapered axle that projects from the bottom of the leg - it's actually a very elegant design. Can be a bit frustrating when removing front wheel for transport - comapred to a regular QR anyway. Shimano actually produce an XTR hub to fit now - so there's obviously plenty people using them.
 
Silver ano front was not compatible with dual crown, the later black ano cnc front part was compatible/beefed up for dual crown.
