Full Sus Chain Length Dilemma

Hey all, not been on in a while but after finally getting some time to myself to fiddle with bikes i find myself with a bit of an issue.

As usual i've been keeping an eye out for cheap bits and bobs popping up and one i got a few months back was an E13 42t extended range sprocket for my 2011 Whyte T120. Didn't realise when i bought it that it wouldn't be compatible with the X9 rear mech i had on so when i found one for a decent price, a SRAM GX 2.1 clutch type rear mech was purchased (long cage as per the X9)

This is where the issues start!

Bought a new SRAM chain as well, (think it was 114 links off the top of my head) but with the rear suspension fully compressed its a couple of links too short on the big/big ring method, thats no bother really but at the other end of the scale, its too long on the small/small ring!!!

Now something like the big/big ring combo is never ever going to be used in real life so would it be safe to setup say around the original 36t largest cog perhaps or should i have got a medium cage rear mech?

Thanks in advance and merry christmas!
:)

Re:

Rear cassette extenders aren’t really meant for people who are running multiple chainrings at the front. How much range are you trying to achieve? By combining such a large rear cog with I assume a huge front one yiubwill never get a chain long enough and if you did it will simply be too long on the smallest cogs.

In answer to the question If you must run multiple front rings I’d probably go with making sure the middle ring and the 42 rear have enough chain. But like I said it’s not really meant to work like that. Ditch the front mech and for a 32 narrow wide and you should be sorted.

TBH, that's all that really needs to be said. You really need to be careful with adding non-standard/massive sprockets to multi-ring set ups. I mean, the current shimano 11 speed stuff will do it, but it's designed around the 11-42 cassette and an 18 tooth range at the front (22/30/40).

I've got a good 1x10 set up - XT cassette & mech & Saint shifter if it's of any interest. You might be able to utilise current crankset with middle ring for a 1x set up.

Re:

In terms of outcome what are trying to achieve by issuing the expander 42T?

What ratio are you currently running front and rear? Why does it need changing?

I’m assuming your aim isn’t to go to a 1x judging by your replies. Why not keep the current setup and fit a narrow wide front ring?
