Fun fact. Halfway between a flat out racing bike and a traditional tourer, the French in their own inimitable way created the 'Demi-Course' style of bicycle in the 1950s, when Peugeot were churning out 185,000 bikes a year.

Basically what it says on the tin! A road bike, with quite upright angles which had mudguard eyes on and could be used for light touring or commuting with a front or rear rack, but could still be stripped down to a proper lightweight. They were often built in cheaper tubesets, like Vitus steel or 531 plain gauge to keep the costs down. They were extremely popular, and still fill the second hand classifieds today.

The Gitane Delta TT was popular on both road and track events in the late 1980s. Here is the advertising blurb:

The cyclist adopts the fetal posture of the skier

The "teardrop" tubes of the Profil frame save 35 watts on the 69 watts consumed by a classic frame.

If normal wheels absorb 74 watts, the new elliptical spoke wheels only consume 24 watts.

The famous Delta handlebar saves 22 watts on the 26 watts consumed by a classic handlebar.

The energy saving is estimated at 117 watts compared to the 600 watts consumed by the man-machine assembly
