Today was a special day. Every year around this time we set ourselves personal challenges in memory of our friend Fran who was an inspiration to many. Today I managed my longest ever solo ride, a 50 mile ride through the moors on Spirit (my Giant Trance). As you can imagine with it being in Cornwall there were a few hills . Not going to lie I'm in pain now but I've spent years dreaming of this and finally I've done it. It doesn't matter how big your ambitions are as long as you're determined to achieve them.
Felt the need for some new vistas, and a longer ride so headed north from Malton to the Moors with a Roman theme in mind. Malton was a Roman garrison town, and despite having passed through a million times, Iād never twigged it had a fort. (Grass with perimeter ditches now, but a nice start.)
Kept to backroads and bridleways which can be patchy but always throw up a few surprises: early orchid and lovely hobbity sheep path:
Historical highlight was the rock-paved āRoman Roadāover the moor (prolly more likely early Saxon according to the blurb). Anyway, I dutifully rode it and was glad Iād brought a 29er as it was pretty gnarly in places .
I have mixed feelings about the moor tops as the grouse-dedicated heather scape is a bit of a eco desert; that said, saw redstarts, peewits, and plenty of larks (couple of squashed adders too).
The valleys are superb though
57 miles; 1100m; a cheese sandwich, a boiled egg and a graze bar. (Should have taken more water, or actually a survival stylee filter straw to slurp up the peaty streams.ā¦.)
Edit: oh, and 40psi in 35mm rubber.
Riverside rambling, actual sunshine, no bugs!View attachment 955931View attachment 955930
No matter what I try, regardless what I buy, that Hardrock will always be my favorite. It's just right
