Frame saver

Hi folks. Been a while since I posted on the forum, but always keep an eye on what's going on Retrobike. Anyhoo, after many years, i'm finally getting around to building up my '92 Dawes Edge. It's only been about 15 years since I dismantled it! I've read on here that spraying some frame saver in it might be a good idea. Therefore i have a few questions; 1. Where do I get some from? 2. What is it, exactly? 3. Can I get it inside the chain/seatstays? 4. I have plenty of WD40, would it do the same job?

Thanks in advance

Marge

I've used Waxoyl in an aerosol easily available from the dreaded Halfords. It's used for rust prevention in car body cavities. Comes with a flexible nozzle tube that's ideal for sticking in the tubing holes etc. best done when warm so stick it in the airing cupboard for a while ( the can not the bike!! ) it will dry into a wax substance that will stop rust.

Frame saver absolutely stinks so dont do it indoors or with a frame you keep in your bedroom, LOL.

In car restoration circles waxoyl isnt all that recommended tbh.

I don't think WD40 would do much good I'm afraid!

I would say Waxoyl is a good idea for a new frame, but it could do more harm than good for an old frame that's been in the shed for 15 years. If there's any moisture or incipient rust inside, Waxoyl could just seal it up so it had no chance of drying out, and then it could be more likely to rust than it was before.

I would have thought a few weeks in the airing cupboard to dry it out as much as possible would be the first step, followed by injecting some Hammerite Kurust or equivalent and swooshing it around, then tip out the excess. Maybe do this a couple of times for each tube. Kurust converts surface rust to a stable material, and I would think that was the best you could do.

You might well be able to get some into the chainstays, but I think it would be rare to find holes for the seat stays unless the rack bosses are suitable.

I use Kurust on my frames:

I tape up or bung all holes in the frame save for the seat tube then pour some Kurust in the frame. Give it a good shake about and make sure you get some in every tube then leave for 15 minutes, I normally repeat the process again with before emptying the Kurust out and washing down the paintwork. Be aware that Kurust does make a mess and will no doubt leave some black staining on your paintwork, have your favoured paint cleaning gear at the ready.

Kurust is intended to be used on things like cars and iron gates, you paint it on, it does it's rust killing work then you paint over it with something like Hammerite paint.

I don't add anything like Waxoyl but I guess you could. Use Kurust to kill off the rust then use Waxoyl instead of paint.
