Re:

I would not like to ream out a seat tube, but some builders did ream the seat lug due to deforming when brazed.

Re:

i doubt if shes anything great,i havent paint stripped the bb shell yet to see if there are any faint
markings.i plan to use her as a winter commute/trainer with ten speed ultegra.
i thought i would ask before she gets powder coated as decals would be better than none.

Long point lugs with good shore lines and thinned down, , semi wrap round seat stays, over BB cable guides (is the rear mech guide missing), round guide for the top of the chain stay cable stop, long dropouts.......so late 60's Italian style or mid 70's (early 70's tended to have no braze ons)

Nice build with the thin seat stays but could be anything from Ellis Briggs to Pennine.

hi , no serial numbers on the bb shell just a <EO> stamped in the middle towards the chain stays.
no rear mech guide, just the front. I have noticed a kind of a neat blob of braze about 4 o'clock on
the down tube about where the band on shifter goes or just behind.i thought this might be a kind of precaution
to stop the band sliding down or that there were bands with locating holes ?
is there anywhere else i could try and look for serial number's ?
thx kevin

Just finding a serial number does not always answer anything, unless its something very well recorded.

I would be more tempted to try & work out the manufacturer from other details or at least narrow it down.

Yes the braze on the down tube is the shifter stop, there maybe one nearer the BB as well.

One thing you could check look down inside the stem & see if there are any remains of any holes fixing positions where a maker's badge would have been, the early bikes these tended to be screwed riveted on & although it maybe smooth on the outside, if there are then finding out if its two or three & their location can greatly help in narrowing the possible maker's field down.

Check the width of the rear drop outs, this maybe also a help in determining the make, they are normally 10.mm: also what is the rear drop out spacing this will help with knowing what gears it originally carried.

My guess is early late 1970s early 1980s

EO is the BB manufacters stamp, by the Late 70's the shorter dropouts / portacatena dropout appeared on a lot of frames, the longer dropouts dropped out of fashion by the very early 80's as stock depleted.
