Valerie Perrine races around the track — competing against (unseen) actor James Farrentino — in 1977’s CBS special Celebrity Challenge of the Sexes. Gary Cooper stops on a country road, leaning against his bike to have a smoke. A publicity still for the 1933 Howard Hawks-directed World War I romance, 'Today We Live'. Cooper, playing an American fighter pilot, and Robert Young, as a British naval officer, are vying for the affection of Joan Crawford. It’s all set in England, hence Coop’s tweedy getup. Vesta Tilley, the British music hall star and top-lining vaudevillian, tumbles from a safety bike. Tilley, nee Matilda Alice Powles, was a huge star in the U.K. and U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renown for her jaunty male impersonator act.

After the Ball, a 1957 film starring Pat Kirkwood as Tilley, commemorated her life and career. Laurence Harvey starred as Vesta’s husband. This image comes from a postcard, postmarked 1908.
