Vesta Tilley, the British music hall star and top-lining vaudevillian, tumbles from a safety bike. Tilley, nee Matilda Alice Powles, was a huge star in the U.K. and U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renown for her jaunty male impersonator act.
After the Ball, a 1957 film starring Pat Kirkwood as Tilley, commemorated her life and career. Laurence Harvey starred as Vesta’s husband. This image comes from a postcard, postmarked 1908.
