Downhilling ruined the sport on various levels..

Oh man i am wetting myself come on you are having a laugh please tell me you are ???

Hes got a point though.

At one time downhill was just a small part of mountain biking with xc being the biggest and most accessable, affordable part.
xc riding depended on a high level of fitness and skill as there wasnt 8+ inches of suspention travel available.
Downhill seemed to take over ( and dont get me wrong here because I have raced xc,dh and slalom (remember that BITD?) and a lot of the xc stopped happening.
Most of the riders who I raced with (xc) didnt want to go into dh but they were the only races being run.
More and more people were also put off by the high costs of buying and running a dh bike too.

I dont know if dh has ruined the sport but more changed it.

If this is a good or a bad thing depends on your outlook, personally I prefer xc riding ( and I do own a couple of dh bikes too ) but the growth in interest in DH has more or less brought an end to the good old xc days.

Personally id rather use my crosser than a DH bike cause even the uphills are like downhills!!

But thats just my take on things.

......waits for the slagging off to follow.....

DH nearly killed the MTB scene , because manufacturers were making £4000 DH bikes that nobody could afford to buy, they were spending a lot of money on DH teams hoping that the TV will come and pay big money for transmission , but it never happened .
Sunn , GT and more nearly disappeared because of it .

But I like Eddie bike, it certainly has its place on here .

Interesting mix of views this month - I'm not going to be controversial but have to agree with lots of what Amey' and Rumpfy have to say. As a British XC racer I'd have to agree that DH nearly killed our sport.

But this thread is about the bikes on display - if the P20 had a rigid fork I may have voted for it but I had to go with one of the Slings. Both sweet builds and so hard to split. Nice one guys! ;)

Not that this is a thread about what discipline you enjoy...but DH did kill mountain biking a bit...

Very discipline specific bikes limit where or how far you can go.

The speed traveled down a hill (as they are intended) puts everyone at risk on public trails. Lets face it, aside from the ski resorts, there are limited places to ride these bikes.

More people can ride most XC trails. Not everyone can hit doubles, drops, or stunts.

More illegal trails are cut or stunts built where they shouldn't be. This causes bad blood with other trail users and the local land management/authorities. This is especially so in California.

I think DH has also killed the race scene a bit too.

I'm not a DH'er...but I can get down a mountain pretty quick and much prefer it to climbing...but the whole Huck 30 foot cliffs and 50lb 10" travel bikes I just can't get into.

All you guys that are moaning about the lobo you really should stop and think about what GT did for cycling at their time they were way out in front with design. And the guy/girl that it belongs to must feel like s**t because of all the nasty comms that some people are saying. If you feel upset because DH hurt the cycle world then open a debate about it in another topic stop battering the lobo and its owner it's really not fair. And as far as I am concerned the lobo is miles better than any other bike here I love it and great to see such a rare beauty  .
