steel will always be the area for small bespoke builders , its (relatively) easy to work and looks good
it rides well
look at the hand built sites ,some real artisans there

if you need a re-fresher ,build an old stumpy, avalanche, apex and enjoy
even an inbred built from gas pipe rides nice

steel is very real , its just modern mtb'ers that aint

Steel rusts, breaks easier than aluminum, is heavy and feels dead, better dispose of all such outdated frames now as carbon is in. BTW I recycle and pay $.30lb.....

I'm sure some are - and I have to own up to being very excited to see what they come up with - but I think it will be a long time, if ever, before carbon takes over from steel for the small custom set up.


I remember seeing that stainless creature for the first time a while back and it's got no less jaw-dropping in the meantime, what an absolute beauty. As HighlandsFlyer alluded, it's the attention to the detail and completeness of the whole that makes it so breathtaking, for me at least.

Loving the action shots too - I want that workshop!

Had to comment on this tho,

I'm sorry to say that Reynolds have transferred most of their tube production to the far east now, I think they only do 853 in Britain [I had read that they also do 953, but when I checked on their site that is made for them by a co in N America http://reynoldstechnology.biz/faqs/materials/1]. So even Steel is a neo slave labour product now.

631, 853 still made in Birmingham. The 520 and 725 tubes are made by a company in Taiwan who make cr-mo for a lot of bikes, among other meatl fabrications. No slave labour about it either.
