esp shifter derailleur question

Right then I've got a esp 9.0 sl woody rear mech and I'm looking for some xray shifters I'm pretty sure I need some esp 900 xrays. I may of found some 7 speed ones can these be used with the 8 speed woody. at the moment I'm running a Severn speed hub with 8 speed cassette with one cog removed cause I was told that 7 and 8 speed cassettes were space differently. So I stuck with the 8 speed to match the mech but if I brought these 7 speed xrays would I need to change my cassette to a 7 speed? And would that cassette be compatable with the 8 speed woody. My god I'm confused wish I'd just stuck with shimano.

Re:

Right, first things first.
ESP 9.0SL and X-ray shifters are not compatible. You need ESP 9.0SL shifters with that rear mech.
Or alternatively X-ray shifters with a Shimano rear mech.
7-speed are spaced the same as 8-speed. The 8-speed freehub body is wider to allow for this. You can use just 7 of the 8 sprockets on a 7 speed body.
A Shimano or Sram cassette will work with both ESP 9.0SL set up, as well as X-ray/Shimano mech set up
Hope this helps ;)

Sram and Shimano 7 speed cassette spacing is 5.0mm. Sram and Shimano 8 speed cassette spacing is 4.8mm. With the float in their top pulley, you can get a 8 speed cassette to work with 7 speed shifters with careful setup using a Shimano derailleur, either running 7 cogs with Rapidfire or 8 with X-Rays or Shimano's thumb shifter's 8th "ghost click". It won't be perfect, but it works. It won't work with Sram derailleurs.

Re:

I'll check but I though all ESP900s where 8sp given they are the top of the range shifter.

You are correct and the ESP900 are the sram 'ESP 1:1' shifting Xrays ;-)

Re:

That's what I thought when it comes to cassette spacing but am I right in thinking that if I use an esp 7 speed xray shifter with a 7 speed cassette I can adjust the esp 9.0 8 speed to just shift over the 7 cogs.maybe?

Re:

I should add that the xrays where earlier than the woody rear mech but shouldn't be a problem.
I would assume they have the same problem as the SRT xrays and they crack at the mounting bolt.

I would have thought there was a matching woody shifter in a more robust Sachs inspired (?) design, much like there is the Betsy version of the ESP9.0 .
You may find just standard 9.0s are easier to get hold of if you prefer better shifters over some cracked nice looking xrays.

No. Cable pull and mech movement will be all over the place.

Mech is 1:1 and has no 'float', shifter is 1:2

A 1mm movement on a SRAM (1:1) is equivalent to a 2mm movement on a Shimano (1:2)

Reread LGF,
ESP shifter!

To opp as long as
Shifter 'pull' = Mech 'pull' it will move correctly
Shifter 'speed' = Cassette 'speed' it will index correctly.

but still quite certain ESP900 where only 8sp http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/v/M ... 1.jpg.html

ESP700/7.0 might have come in 7speed though
