EDC -Every Day Carry ?

The only trouble of course with a lot of this survival gear that people collect, is when you might actually need it, you find you don't have it with you, because the mode of transport, it has to go in the hold, you get to pay excess baggage for or it is just plain confiscated by the ss at check in.

But the likelihood of surviving a jet going down, is pretty scant, but I have travelled on a lot of piston driven and turbo prop aircraft in various parts of the world. the sort of low level stuff that does make you think, given the tin pot outfits I have used.

As to a 'bug out' bag, I have something with useful paperwork in it, a sterile first aid kit containing needles, syringes and sutures ( can even be used for currency in some parts of the world) also water purification stuff, iodine, aspartame and those nasty little bleach tasting tablets, but they do a litre of water a pop as clean water is the most important thing to consider, any other tools can be made as necessary.

But I notice with a lot of these EDC commandos, a lot of what they deem necessary to carry relies too much on modern society, just think what life would be like if the electricity went off for an extended period of time, or the water started to stink, or put something into a more pertinent context, our money started to become worthless to the point that it doesn't buy anything, then what will we do.

I can kind of understand wanting to be ready for things, but in britain we're not in a seismic zone, we don't have really bad weather, like hurricanes etc.

There is very little to prepare for, if the economy tanks tomorrow everyone will be in the same boat! just some people will have more fire starting material in the form of stacks of notes. Having a backpack full of stuff like this guy isn't going to help you.

If everything goes seriously wrong we still wouldn't have full scale anarchy, because humans are social creatures and far more would prefer an ordered society than being chased through the streets by mad max style gangs.

Even in the most lawless places there is some form of hierarchy and things just carry on, the police might not be the ones policing but the hierarchy remains.

I agree, even with my oft disdain for people and hierarchal systems, I do believe people will not be running around like headless chickens, but I do believe the basic survival formula will be followed, perhaps even adjusted into ;

Protection, water, food, tools and basically that is society.

As to the survival aids, they are really unnecessary and I do think a lot of the survival buzz has come via the military, where it is very pertinent given war, but a bunch of civvies, not in our society or country and we will never be truly free anyway as strength is in numbers and the stuff that makes society better is in numbers, we will gravitate towards each other as we are social creatures.

Now I have done various things in the past, desert survival, sea survival, mountaineering, bush craft, phytotherapy, foraging all sorts, I used to be very active and very clued up, but one thing I learned about it all and this goes for living in society now, it is not what tools you have, it is what knowledge you have as we as humans being tool makers, we can make tools if we need them and to carry them 'just in case' can actually create a survival situation itself and with that, actually narrow the mind because one is focusing too much on efficacy of the contents of their bug out bag

Well, I got my new Emerson knife. It cost quite a lot but is probably the last knife I will need to buy.

I might be persuaded to get one of those Spyders though!
