The only trouble of course with a lot of this survival gear that people collect, is when you might actually need it, you find you don't have it with you, because the mode of transport, it has to go in the hold, you get to pay excess baggage for or it is just plain confiscated by the ss at check in.
But the likelihood of surviving a jet going down, is pretty scant, but I have travelled on a lot of piston driven and turbo prop aircraft in various parts of the world. the sort of low level stuff that does make you think, given the tin pot outfits I have used.
As to a 'bug out' bag, I have something with useful paperwork in it, a sterile first aid kit containing needles, syringes and sutures ( can even be used for currency in some parts of the world) also water purification stuff, iodine, aspartame and those nasty little bleach tasting tablets, but they do a litre of water a pop as clean water is the most important thing to consider, any other tools can be made as necessary.
But I notice with a lot of these EDC commandos, a lot of what they deem necessary to carry relies too much on modern society, just think what life would be like if the electricity went off for an extended period of time, or the water started to stink, or put something into a more pertinent context, our money started to become worthless to the point that it doesn't buy anything, then what will we do.
