Ebay "auction" site

Oh hum. More weirdness and bugs.

Had an item for sale that disappeared from the searches and was no longer visible domestically or EU wide.

For three days I noticed it was added to some ones shopping cart, but no purchase.

This makes no sense, and reading up:

If an item disappears from your cart

There are a number of reasons why an item could be automatically removed from your cart. For example:
  • Someone else may have purchased the item
  • The seller or eBay may have ended the listing early, or it naturally expired
  • If the item was listed in an auction-style format with a Buy It Now option, someone else may have placed a bid
  • You may have added the item to your cart on a different eBay site
  • The seller may have changed their buyer requirements

All I did to get it visible again in the search was to modify the listing title, and voila all appears again. I suspect some people are actually using the cart more like the function of following the item and never checking out.

I know ebay want to get shot of us pesky non-business users in an attempt to become a home for knock off goods, like some kinda cut price amazon, but now I've been chucked out because i don't own the latest bit of tech! 🤣.

I cant install the updated app on either my tablet or phone as the operating systems are apparently "too old".

So im back to the desk top version....which oddly seems not to have been updated since wndows 3.1 era.

Well thats not very retro friendly is it! 🤣

Once again, in a world where we are told to recycle, reuse and not create waste, surely this kinda non legacy decision makes no sense. There's nothing wrong with either bit of kit, but if they had their way they would now lounge in a drawer and a whole load more crap would be created to needlessly replace them.

Oh, but i forget, we don't actually do anything to help the environment, we just talk about it......welcome to the "greenwash generation".

Bring back the rag and bone man with his barrow, the scrap man with his horse, the dustman who gave kids stuff from the truck (got a sweet jar full of marbles from ours when i was 8 , having what you can afford and doing your best with it, fixing your car in the gutter with a neighbours help, compost heaps, 10p returnable corona bottles and milk in glass, doing diy and furniture you dont chuck away everytime you decorate the room.

Green....really....what because you own an l.e.d. lightbulb 🤣.*

Sorry.....rant over.

* which will last roughly 1/10 of the hours stated..but can you prove that.....and did you keep the receipt....no thought not.

If the operating systems are too old for the eBay app to run, I suspect they're too old to be getting security updates, in which case it might not be a good idea to be using the devices for anything financial. I don't know, but it would be sensible if the system requirements of the app were linked to the security of the system. 🤷‍♂️

We can get milk in glass bottles delivered by our milkman, but 10p returnable Corona bottles should definitely make a comeback!

They aren't that old! Thats the point! The tablet is only 4 years old! It just doesn't have the latest android version.

Security is fine....we use really aggressive bespoke business security...in real time...thats on on all our devices....much more secure or i wouldn't be able to see anything of the internet at all! 🤣

The eBay app currently requires Android 10 or newer. That means that your version of Android must be 9 or earlier and version 9 stopped getting security updates three years ago. Running security software on an insecure OS is of questionable benefit.

I think the real problem is with device manufacturers not providing updates: your devices might be capable of running more recent versions of Android but they're not getting the updates. If they are four years old, but security updates stopped three years ago, (obviously) only one year of security was provided. FWIW, by way of comparison, Google are now offering seven years of updates from date of release on their phones.

I agree with your points about green-washing; I'm just pointing the finger of blame in a slightly different direction.

Over the last month or so I've had quite a bit of NOS mtb gear no ebar for sale, I almost always go auction but ive noticed its a format that seems to of just died on there, tons of watchers but not bids...as many have said on here and social media the sellers mtb market has bottomed out on a biblical scale and I fear for retailers and manufacturers.

Almost nobody is prepared to pay a fair price - its got to be cheap, like a going-out-of-business sale.

Personally I think Chain Reaction cemented in the idea that you should always pay as little as possible cut bike stuff (not a fair price that enables a business to survive) and then after losing 150million pounds over 20 years, flooded the market by selling off their last 2 million stock for peanuts.

"Bikeworkshop" I am on the flip side of that, I actually do pay over the odds to get the bike stuff I need to complete builds, ive even paid silly money for some items, its silly I know but at the time its necessary, for instance there were a very unique seat post for sale on ebay on a "BIN" basis at £190, it was nos and no one else had them so as it was colour relevant to my build I paid it, for me IF riders have the goods I will simply pay with no questions as long as its not too over the top priced, BUT saying that something crucial has happened to the used and new market and I would so not like to be a director of a bike company in this current market which seems to show no break anytime soon.
