Early Saracen Lovers Anonymous......

My 89 kili flyer comp is 27.0 seat post - based on what you say for the 27.2 I'd get a cheapo 27.0 one (think I got a kalloy one for a fiver.....). If there is no saddle also then you can pick up those modern reproduction Selle Italia turbo saddles quite cheaply (sub £30) - they suit this bike very nicely.

In terms of gears some people on here will say stick to the original 3x7 but I'm more open minded. I think 1x1 is cool if it has horizontal drop outs or you have the patience / skills to find the magic ratio. The chain tensioner will spoil the look. I think 1x7/8 is also good - although if the rear spacing is 130mm just check the freehub can take an 8 speed cassette.

Thanks, that's a shame about the seat post being 27.0, I have an anodized blue post that would have gone well with the colour, will see what I have here in the way of saddles, I have a box somewhere with a couple of flites and a san marco rolls in it amongst other beater saddles, might have an old 27mm seat post from a road bike, I want to avoid spending as much as is possible.

The 1x1 option will only come into effect if these shifters don't work otherwise it'll be geared, no horizontal dropouts so would be with a tensioner and spacers which I picked up for a fiver some time ago and haven't used. The guy who gave it to me kept the big ring which is why I'm considering 1x7, all my 110bcd rings are in road sizes. I have a triple 94bcd chainset but that was earmarked for my abandoned Alpinestars project, we'll see how it develops.

So here's what I have (the bog rolls around the bars is because the grips had melted and turned to tar)

I can't see myself using the green bar ends so if they're of any use to anyone here I'm happy to give them away if postage costs are covered, possibly the yellow bottle cage too.

Here's a pic of the tyre issue, they appear to be sort of decomposing a bit, the rear is much worse than the front. So far my shopping list stretches as far as cables, 27mm seat post, seat post qr/bolt and possibly a chain, I'd rather keep tyres off it.

There's a pic of both wheels below, with original skewers!! Strangely the front rim is hardly worn, there's still some anodizing on the brake surface, however the back has seen a lot of braking, is this an MTB thing? I'd usually expect the front to be more worn.

Haha, take that

Here's one part I won't be re-using

Does anyone know what these Zoom stems are made of out of interest? it appears to have good old fashioned rust on it however looks like it's made from alu

Also any tips for removing the black finish off the crank arms, it's pretty well worn from heal rub in places however I like the look of silver against the pink of the frame and want to tidy them up and take them down to silver all over if realistic.

Onza bar ends still available for Karma if anyone wants them

I think the zoom stems are chromalloy but not 100% certain but a quick polish up with some fine wire wool and some car waxand polish should leave it looking good if the rust isn't to deep ..

The crank arms will probably require a fair amount of sanding so light sanding and some paint stripper maybe the best policy although i'd be tempted to use some caustic soda and a fair bit of sanding and polishing with a dremmel if you've got one ..

Re:

Here is a rather tired looking 89 Traverse that I picked up with the help from Retroyetirigid who picked it up for me - a big thanks to him. Needs some attention but hopefully should look half decent again once a strip down, greased, cleaned and polished :) Probably a project for the summer at the moment  but thought I would share since there are not too many of these old gals around.

^ looks nice, I'm currently rebuilding my Klliflyer from the same year and its been a real pleasure, the whole thing has needed stripping down, polishing and greasing but not much more complicated than that so far except tensioning up the wheels a bit. Good luck with it.

Quick update on mine. Been quite busy at work so slow progress but now ready for reassembly. I currently focused on the wheels which need a bit of attention, found a 27.0mm seat post (which then needed shimming with some drink can!!) and saddle, still haven't given my attention to the shifters yet which are the only things of concern.

here's some pics of the bare frame

Front hub serviced and nice and smooth now.

Going to brave the dismantling and cleaning out the shifters next and also considering stripping and rebuilding the freehub. I've never done either of these things before so a bit worried I might dismantle stuff that won't go back or bite off a bit more than chewable. Any tips on either of these jobs before I proceed?
