Dropout Merckx San Remo 1976

Jérémy!

Retro Newbie
Hello everyone,

A few months ago I broke the dropout on my 1976 Eddy Merckx San Remo and my local bike dealer couldn't find the part for me because apparently Eddy Merckx no longer produces or sells the part. I can't find it on the internet either. Here are two photos attached, one with the part and one with the missing part. Does anyone know where I can find it? I'm not a specialist but I like riding this bike from time to time and it's such a shame to get stuck because of a small piece.

Thanks a lot,

Jérémy

Does it just protect one side? If its a simple flat shape you could just draw it out onto a sheet of aluminium and hacksaw/file out a new one. If its a special profile that clips over/onto the frame, it might be more challenging!

Do you have a picture of the broken part?

Thank you for your reply! After checking, I don't have the broken part and the profile is flat, but there are the two screws that are normally present (one of which is missing as can be seen in the photo). I think I might be able to make a piece of aluminium and glue it into the shape I want, but I'm not sure how long it will last.

As long as the old one if you do it right!

I would;

1.Find out depth/thickness of the piece you need + find small piece of alu sheet to suit.
2. Measure out the hole spacing, make a couple of paper templates until you get the shape you need just right.
3. Draw round/stick on your template to the alu sheet.
4. Drill holes to appropriate diameter for your mount screws (you'll need another to replace the missing one).
5. Countersink holes (if required, I can't quite tell from the image)
6. Use a drill to make the axle/dropout cutout at the correct diameter
7. Saw/Dremel out the outer shape of the part
8. Clean up + attach
