I remember well the state of my hollow-pin chain half way round a mtb race but at least steel has a bit more weight to lose.

Drilling fell out of fashion when aero became king.

If your race was entirely uphill, the weight savings might exceed losses to air resistance

Love drillium, but it's more of a look for me than weight saving. Always feels good to get expensive bike parts and chuck them in a lathe/clamp on a milling machine or drill press to modify them... as long as they don't come flying out of the chuck or work lose mid machining!
