Hi

i realise that this post was a while ago - but just incase your interested

watts is electrical power

lumens is total light output

the only way that these things can be linked is if you include efficiency

a 3w lux uses 3w of electrical power to make 80 lumens
a 10 watt halogen uses 10 w of electrical power to make aprox 200 lumens

but if you want to do this now (may 2007) then id use a cree or seoul emitter that will provide 220 lumens for about 4 watts of electricity

im currently building a light with 2 cree emitters using about 8watts
that will provide over 400 lumens ill post a photo when ive finished

cool

i thought id start mine in the summer so that they will be finished by winter

but they will actually be finished in about a week!

for about 50 quid you can make a totally custom light that beats a cateye triple shot and is as bright as H.I.D systems

mine looks bling too so keep watch and ill post you some pics

(as well as a retro geek im a torch geek!)

erm

kind of

it is simple maths

eg)

say you have 1 led and your using 3x2200mah batteries in series
then it will last just over 2 hours

this is why...

led will draw 1amp(ish) at 3.9v (freshly charged batteries)
if the batteries are 2200mah thats 2.2amps

so all you do is 2.2amp/h / 1amp = 2.2 hours

but this will not be that accurate because as the battery drains the amp draw will go down and the led will get dimmer

what use is 2.2hours if half of that time the led is too dim??

the best thing to do is use a driver (little circuit) - that supplies a constant current - so the led stays the same brightness (for a shorter time) then just goes off when batteries are empty.

hope you understand all that

that was fast i,m still on the holders design the third holder is one of those cheap led lights off flea bay

very nice

i went the same route as you last winter with the cheep holders and the single torches modified

but then i saw some posts on CPF and wanted to make something totally custom and bright

when i put the 3rd light in it will be as bright as a H.I.D system but at way less cost ( and slightly better runtime)

1 cree p4 torch is enough light really but nothing beats lighting all the forest up at midnight
