just to avoid confusion, the pic posted is from tom's website, that is not my frame. that is a stainless steel lugset and the tubes are 853, copper plated then 'antiqued' then lacquered, it's a finish i like but i'm not sure i'll go with it.

we'll see what happens nearer the time.

Tom (owner/builder) of Demon frameworks went to the NAHBS last year aswel as the bespoked bristol show (where he won an award for his work) it gives a closer look of the frame pictured above. also check out the interviewers lamb chops! they're ma-hoo-sive!!

i dropped one of my bikes and some info in today (along with a deposit!) so the ball can start rolling.

between us the design of the frame itself i think will be straight forward, i have only specified geometry and some basics regarding cable placement, i think for me the decision of the finish will be the hardest thing. the copper plating looks cool, although in the flesh the antiqued finish is darker than the above picture. i am leaning towards paint but that's where i think the trouble can start, so many possibilities!

Are you going lugged?

Funnily had been looking at his work recently but fillet brazed over lugged.

tom wants to have a signature style on his mountain bikes, that style being a lugged front end, for me i hadn't specifically thought about lugs at all, only because i hadn't seen it done in years other than on steel road bikes. my attitude is that there are no reasons not to do it. there are many ways in which tubes can be joined, why not use this one?

tom's lugs are a mix of bought or machined in house by himself, for the head lugs of these frames tom makes them himself, but i should add that the rest of the frame is fillet brazed, the only lug assembly is the head tube. if you look at the gallery on his website it shows alot of lugs he has made or has modified from standard.

we have also discussed drop outs (at some length) thinking along the lines of the paragon style drop outs with the disc caliper inside the seat/chain stay, also the brake hose will run through the top tube.

i want the frame to be very stealthy from that point of view, just keeping things out of the way. the one thing that has frustrated me about my 07 clockwork is cable/hose guides on top of the top tube, they have started to mark the paint just with general use so it is things like this i want to avoid with this frame, luckily tom is in complete agreement with these suggestions.

Can you have the disc adaptor inside the seat/chain stay when using paragon ends? I thought that would mean when you move the wheel back to accomodate a new chain or as the chains wears then the brake pads would move relative to the rotor?

paragon do many different drop outs, these will not be sliding drop outs, this will be a geared bike, i don't subscribe to the leg burning pain that is single speeding like you do Ed!

i have looked through their website, and discussed them with tom, he'll decide wether it is better to use their drop outs or make his own, it was he who mentioned them first then i went and looked.

did you read any of the thread? the lady whose bike it is had the lugs designed to match a tattoo she has, she effectively designed them in a flat form and then Tom made them three dimensional.
