hey - this thread has been dormant a while!

I just bought a gold Dawes Fox and starting to go about fixing it up.

If anyone can advise on the wheel and spoke size would be a great help.

The rim is a "Rigida Superchromix 36".. hard to read as barely legible

Someone earlier in thread mentioned "27 X 1 1/4 inch wheel".. is this the standard on Dawes Fox and what spoke size would that take?

That will be a 27" wheel (ETRTO 630mm). Spoke length will depend on rim and hub. The simplest solution is to remove a similar spoke and measure it. It looks like it has steel rims from the photos, so don't spend too much on repairing the wheels when you could replace and upgrade with aluminium rim wheels. Steel rims are heavy, make the handling and acceleration ponderous and are downright dangerous braking in the wet.

Looks to be steal rims alright.
It seems easy enough to get steal spokes, so I will hold off replacing with aluminium for a while

Spokes in stainless are standard for quality wheels. It's the rim material in aluminium that counts as it is the bulk of the weight and the braking surface.

the spokes need replacing on the free wheel side.. this could be tricky!

Just bought a Dawes fox, pretty sure its a 24.5" frame, could be wrong.

Would love some inside info on the bike(s) as i wanted a vintage Peugeot but had to settle because of the price to condition ratio.

things i do know. Single front cog, 5 gears on the rear. obviously one gear change lever. solenoid lighting system that runs from the rotation on the wheel (looks original, still works) parcel shelf, and mudguards.. oh yeah and the double lever brakes are a brilliant idea.


but yeah anything you guys can come up with to help because i would like to strip it to basics and refurb as best a originally possible.

Sadly only on paper but not in practice! What happens is that the upper lever usually touches the bars before the brakes are fully on.

Learn to ride on the hoods and apply the brakes by squeezing round with your fingers. It works fine. If you insist on having levers on the tops too, then fit interrupter levers.
