Such as 'Map my Tracks' etc are they accurate? After a ride i checked my ride and all good until the speed & distance. It said claimed my max speed was 37.5mph. Yet my cycle computer said 31 mph. Also the the distance was 1/2 mile different. So which is correct? Bin the cycle computer? How do such apps work?

it depends how good the signal they are recieving and the chipset/sampling they do, then the processing they do on the data they generate, can be anywhere from very good to poor.
Also what sort of computer are we talking about, a traditional wheel sensor one, or a gps one?

i have a gps computer, that then uploads the raw data to garmin website which processes and then displays it,it also passes the file to strava whch also process it and displays it...generally the dist is the same but top speed can be quite different...all due to how they process the data.

Re:

I've had the gps speed issue and it's usually if you have gone under some deep cover like dense tree canopies or concrete structures like wide road bridges or in my case a 75 metre canal tunnel under the 449, it 'loses' you but then 'finds' you again when you re-appear but doesn't properly do the maths.

On your bike computer, you may be out slightly on your wheel circumference (or you may be bang on!!) and that can cause quite a discrepancy on a longish ride.

its a standard wheel sensor. All looks very hit and miss. Best just stick to ride time?

Well you just have to accept that GPS is not perfectly accurate.
If you're going to go, well that last ride was 10.2 miles and this next ride was 9.9 miles and the next 10.1 and find that unacceptable (some people do and get bent out of shape) then GPS is not for you. But if you can live with it being an approximation of what you did, then that's what you get.
