Had a friend knocked off his bike by a car, not seriously hurt but written off his bike, this got me thinking; I should really get some sort of cover as these incidents are becoming more common. I know the CTC & BCF offer liability insurrance and legal aid with these sort of matters. Anyone had experience of either and which should I join?

Lately I've been think the same thing, a few close calls on the very simple 1 mile commute.
I had been looking at CTC simply as they had an offer in magazines where if you joined you got a year of MTB accident recovery - all in £54 IIRC

CTC member over here.

Check your house insurance, you may find you have legal cover included in that.

I'm in the CTC. I've never had to claim and hopefully never will but it gives me piece of mind when cycling past pedestrians and stationary traffic. Its only about £35 which is probably about a tenth of the cost of replacing one of those painted, heated, electricaly adjustable, automatically folding wingmirrors fitted to 90% of new cars nowadays. Imagine if you took out the rear bumper on a new Porsche or something and buckled your wheel so you couldnt ride off! You'd have to leave your bike and do a runner or stay there and stump up for the repair. Or alternatively you could just pop out your CTC card and let them worry about it.

For your 35 notes you get £10million liability cover, 10% off purchases in participating retail oulets (so it can end up paying for itself if your a bit clever) and a free magazine through your door every other month. Its not a bad read either!!!

It's also important to point out that the CTC solicitors are specialists in cycling-related claims, so they have a better chance of success!

Given their success in the realms of cycling advocacy we should all be joining the CTC anyway. BCF is great for racers but i am not aware that they are especially active in other aspects of riding.
