Also, the crap advice often comes from people who do their level best to sound authoritative while talking out of their arse. Stating that their occupation is 'engineer' is a classic technique of the clueless know-it-all.

They are the ones that scare me, or ones who can argue against the advice of genuine, respected experts. Anyone wonder why Rody doesn't post on here any more?

Some heavy posters seem authoritative but offer wild guesses with no mechanical knowledge. Would they feel responsible if somebody took their advice and harmed themselves?

.

Oooh heavy posters... guilty!

I do quite happily stand by the advice I give as its 99% come from personal experience.

Stuff like running 9spd chains in a 7 or 8 spd set up for instance, 7spd thumbies in 8spd systems, removing stuck BB's and seatposts, awkward cable pulls of front mechs and shifters, BB axle widths verses frame materials...

Its all fun! I have books to refer too and if quoting, I'll always try to quote the source (usually Sheldon Brown) and, as an engineer...

(I did work for 6 months in a bike shop btw, bodging with the right tools is so much easier!)

there was also the scary thread about the interchangeability of 1 1/8" vs. 1" forks just coz it fit.

I agree with the OP. Some heavy posters seem authoritative but offer wild guesses with no mechanical knowledge. Would they feel responsible if somebody took their advice and harmed themselves?

It's the internet afterall and you shouldn't believe everything you read are useless caveats when a person asks for help, thinks he is getting good advice and rides off on a dangerous time bomb of a bike.

Yeah, this is what I'm getting at. It's not about being PC/fussy/HELF UN SAVETIE GON MAD, it's about not being a dickhead and putting others at risk in the process.

I'm not attacking decent bodges and well-researched information. The opposite, in fact.

Jesus. I've got to get this off my chest. I've actually been rather astounding at some posters technical (lack) of wrenching abilities and the level of questions. In general, I try to offer practical advice on cases where I have experience, but the point is it is up to the receiver to digest and make a proper judgement. I've been literally amazed considering we are on a forum of essentially getting knackered crap restored into a rideable good looking shape. To push some sort of blame back to those who try to contribute is not on.

Ultimatly, if you are not confident to try anything technical and follow internet advice blindly without evaluating, go to the LBS and pony up instead.

For the specific issue, about fixing a cracked rim by drilling a hole I'm utterly speechless. A *ucked rim is a *ucked rim and no amount of drilling, brazing, soldering, duct-taping will fix this critical part to any thing like it's original state. This is basic basic basic basic.
