Coventry Eagle retro fit

My wife has a similar Coventry Eagle frame but in the mixte version. Same colour and 531 etc.
Yours is the first I have seen in a long while in that colour, nice :)
Keep us up to date with how your progressing and also post some full pictures if you could.
Thanks for sharing and best of luck with it.

Jamie

Jamie, could you possibly check on the bike and post a pic of the Reynolds sticker please. Mine has mostly come off and trying to identify the exact tubing spec.
I can see that it mentions stays and forks but don't know whether it's 531st or c etc.
My sticker is red and orange and like a diamond shape. Can't recognise it in any of the Reynolds catalogues online.
I'll put a pic up soon.
Cheers

Re:

I would think about what you are doing. Cold setting the rear for 130mm will change YOUR bike for good. Why not get some decent brake blocks and build or have built a pair of 27"x1 1/4" alloy rimmed wheels?
That way you can easily keep the bike close to original and can even change back to your original wheels if you wanted.
My view is if you change the rear you may as well fit a modern groupset and wheels. Nothing wrong in that of course if that floats your boat.

Only my opinion, it is your bike and your decision.

Re:

Thanks Steve,

Going to and from the idea of putting all new bits on :?
The thing is, all the hubs I've seen are 130mm wide so I'd be going down the cold setting route anyway?
Anyway, I'm getting a quote or two for wheels with freehub, brakes, cassette and chain.

Have found out from hlloydscycles that the frame tubes, forks and stays are Reynolds SMS, not 531.
They have a decal for it.

My decal https://www.flickr.com/photos/metal8/27 ... ed-public/
I found this online https://www.flickr.com/photos/metal8/27 ... ed-public/

Have asked Reynolds about the SMS as haven't seen much mention of it.
Always thought my frame was a 531.

I think it's a straight gauge version of 531...perhaps

Still, it's a very light bike with great handling.

Hi
Lots going on earlier tonight so a bit slow to sit and get round to replying
Then seen your post about the SMS tubing and thought a: 'the pics' remember the pics! and b: you had my curiosity going as I hadn't seen that SMS tubing decal before but had to check anyway as I was sure I remembered it being 531.
So it was. Though would like to hear more about this SMS as I've not heard of it before. Any idea where it sits in the line up?
Pics are probably no use now but here they are anyway. ;)

Re:

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread and all the advice. :D
Special thanks to Jamie for getting the pics and info regards your Coventry Eagle.

I've decided on:
Weinman 27" RM19 bolt on front & rear Quando hub http://tinyurl.com/z7mee3l
Shimano MF-TZ21 7 Speed Freewheel & Chain http://tinyurl.com/zumtljo
2 Schwalbe Marathon 27" Tyres http://tinyurl.com/gmecbg8
New MTB style alloy rim specific brake blocks, kept the Weinmann 730 side-pull calipers on just now.

All purchased and fitted by LBS, £132 total cost on the road.
Been out, rides like I remember, brakes now massively improved, even with the so called 'suicide levers'
Just got to touch up paintwork and fit pannier rack, need P-Clips to attach to seat stays.

I'll post pics.

Cheers

Re:

Update to bike renovation.

Ordered Tektro 559 long reach brakes to upgrade from Weinmann 730's. £38.50
Small tin of Humbrol grey primer does all the chips and scuffs etc. £1.39
Green metallic and white nail polish, colour mixed to very near original + clear gloss top coat. £7
Schwalbe Marathon's. £25 for pair
P-Clips for rack
New brake and gear cables, inner and outer.
All parts tarnish removed and polished with T-Cut metal polish, £3 from Asda.

BBracket cleaned and re-greased as is headset.
Selle Italia Flite 1990 saddle. £42

A lot of the prices were keener as I used TopCashBack or voucher codes or both.

Just putting back together and very pleased with results.
I'll post pics as soon as ready :D

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread and all the advice. :D
