Cool and good performance commute/city bikes?

Believe it or not, that's green paint applied by brush over its original 1949 pearlescent green. The paint under the green is pretty good; why they did that, I'll never know.

I adopted a Triumph Traffic Master when I was at university - it was lying unloved in the depths of the garage at the house I was renting.

I loved it - Sturmey Archer 3 speed, long wheelbase, white wall tyres, British racing green. Statesmanlike.

Kind of wish I hadn't been honest enough to leave it there (in better condition than I found it).

Commuting weapon of choice out here is a Langster in dark grey. Haven't been beaten yet.

Chris667 did you convert that from rod brakes? if so Id be interested how. I've a '40s raleigh waiting for a full restoration in the garage.

on-topic, I've almost finished building a sleek matt black cannondale badboy for the commute. I'd been using a '94 hardrock with steel everything until recently but the weight was getting me down.

I use a Specialized Langster. Bought it used and it had already been upgraded with 105 cranks/brakes, Hope ultralite f.hub and Mavic Open-Pro rims, plus some Easton and Bontrager bits. I think it was £200.

That's a Clubman, Raleigh's performance bike. It's Reynolds 531 instead of 2030, and it's more than 10lbs lighter than a Superbe (the one with rod brakes). A proper racing machine, although I grant you it doesn't look like one. In 1955 the 100 mile TT record was set on one of these, and it stood until 1983.

You'll be able to take the rod brakes off yours though. You could fit a caliper brake (new rims, though, if you have westwood rims), or fit a pair of Sturmey braked hubs. Or convert it to fixed, it'd have perfect chainline and spacing for a track hub.

Incidentally, I rode into town for a pint last night, and a sexy American woman started talking to me about my bike.

This thread went very old skool.

I'd still really like summat new but in the meantime something very old skool found me! :D :)

Could be a good laugh. i don't do roadies, but I reckon with some upturned bars and a few tweaks and maybe single speed, we could be in business. and for the sake of my slippy passage ways, maybe some cross tyres, or keep it road only and turn my Revo boneshaker into a 29er. hmm
