Cook Bros crank re etching

Use a decal template to mark up the letters precisely in marker pen, then use a glass etcher to lightly remove the surface ano. Take your time, steady hands are needed but it looks close enough like laser etching.

Alternatively you can buy a product akin to an abrasion resistant mac-tac, it's what they use for making decorative marble gravestones.. send the CBR image/lettering to a sign makers/t-shirt printer.. kinda place, along with a sheet of the above mentioned, they'll cut numerous CBR decals out of the sheet on the plotter. You can lay it on the crank, pick the lettering out of the template with a seam ripper and sandblast Cooks Brothers Racing with an airbrush type thingy.. the finish wouldn't be shiny but it would be neat.
You'll get numerous templates so try it on a different piece of aluminium first to make sure you're happy with the finish.. you might even find a company who can do this for little cost.. i've never looked into it.

This kinda thing.. it's a cheap method because you don't have to figure out a way of holding the crank down to a machine bed.

The only problem with this^ method.. when they etch the hip flasks for instance, they have a jig/model of the underside of the flask which fits on the machine bed, the flask sits on it for support and stops it moving around during the etching process, not a problem to make a jig when you’re etching 100’s of flasks but it’s expensive to make a jig for a single crank.

Depends on the surface contours. I've etched stuff just lay on the bench and also in a rotating chuck. Just talk to the guys that use it for advice. Jigs aren't always required.

Look for a makerspace near you with a laser cutter

We had one at work I used to cut and engrave all kinds of things

Most decent high schools have them too

As above you'll need to work out a way of holding the crank level on the bed (blu tack?) I just used to wedge things in place, as its the laser that moves not the bed.

I've done this on a set of E cranks in the past. Bought a set of negative "cook bros. racing" decals from Gil i.e. with the lettering is cut out. Then taped all around the edge of the decal and used a solution of caustic and an cotton bud to remove ano from the lettering.
