Looks like 21 is a safe maximum then, thanks for that mate. @WhtANightmare @vcballbat has worked it outUsing some high tech measuring equipment developed by NASA and a Regina 14-22 block I've got 45mm centre to tip and 5 teeth + ½ a gap + ½ a tooth

Looking at the Huret drawing it looks like 6 teeth in the ¼ and if I enlarge the picture and place my 22 over it appears to be bigger though this can be a bit deceiving, need the derailleur drop measurement.Looks like 21 is a safe maximum then, thanks for that mate. @WhtANightmare @vcballbat has worked it out
Agreed, just to be sure.Looking at the Huret drawing it looks like 6 teeth in the ¼ and if I enlarge the picture and place my 22 over it appears to be bigger though this can be a bit deceiving, need the derailleur drop measurement.
I agree, I'd be amazed if that mech coped with 25 teeth, should cope with 21-22 teeth happily. Happy daysFor a horrid moment then, I thought the tea straining spoon was some kind of essential NASA developed tool needed to wrench on old bikes
According to this from 1956: max sprocket spread 14 - 25, max chain-ring spread 8 teeth difference. Having the two maxed out sounds fairly optimistic to be honest. Think it was more common for a 22 max sprocket on a "race" bike.
I'd take a chance with a 24 max sprocket - they were available. It's very very rare to see more teeth than that and looking at my notes the Maillard Atom from the 40s and 50s never really changed capacity in 3, 4, or 5 speed.

Tha nks @Guinessisgoodforyou I'll try measure it a bit later today@WhtANightmare if you measure the distance between the wheel spindle centre and the top of the mech cage, I will measure some freewheels.
I like the cat for scale too this is some truly imaginative and impressive measurement techniqueUsing some high tech measuring equipment developed by NASA and a Regina 14-22 block I've got 45mm centre to tip and 5 teeth + ½ a gap + ½ a tooth
