Claud Butler - Carpenter - Vintage Bike - Wheel Help

Using some high tech measuring equipment developed by NASA and a Regina 14-22 block I've got 45mm centre to tip and 5 teeth + ½ a gap + ½ a tooth 👍

For a horrid moment then, I thought the tea straining spoon was some kind of essential NASA developed tool needed to wrench on old bikes

According to this from 1956: max sprocket spread 14 - 25, max chain-ring spread 8 teeth difference. Having the two maxed out sounds fairly optimistic to be honest. Think it was more common for a 22 max sprocket on a "race" bike.

I'd take a chance with a 24 max sprocket - they were available. It's very very rare to see more teeth than that and looking at my notes the Maillard Atom from the 40s and 50s never really changed capacity in 3, 4, or 5 speed.

I agree, I'd be amazed if that mech coped with 25 teeth, should cope with 21-22 teeth happily. Happy days :)

My best attempt to get a photo of the measurement, not sure if I fully got the right bit or not, but if I did it looks to be close to 60mm max.
