Chas Roberts White Spider ii build thread - is this the catalogue bike?

What else do you have hidden away in your garage??? 😜 Great story and gorgeous bike. Keeping an eye on this one! 😎😍
Too many bikes including a couple of broken ones. There was a trek 520 tourer but just returned that to the original owner - my old boss at a bike shop I used to work at. There is some sort of Mozer and a Specialized Epic bonded carbon road frame.

Lovely example and a great colour scheme. For it to be the catalogue bike, I think the decal placement on the downtube would have to have altered and (probably more indicative) the fade on the drive side chainstay looks different, with the rear mech cable stop yellow in the catalogue and blue on yours? Difficult to say exactly though.
Great spot the difference work.

It’s been two steps forward and one step backwards with this build. Life got in the way with work and relatives visiting so we put all the parts back in the garage. Or so I thought we had thought. My husband had a bit of time off earlier in December so planned to start the project again. However, after much searching we could not find the Tioga stem or bars and one of the brake levers was missing also. It must have got misplaced or left outside. Who knows….. but after giving up the search we were resigned to buying up more stuff to finish the build. I suppose we could have used the syncros stem but at 0 degree rise we thought it would be a bit too low.

IMG_1455.jpeg IMG_1459.jpeg Anyway a bit of digging around eBay we found a suitable Tioga bar and stem combo located in Poland. The stem was 135mm so a bit longer than the 120mm we previously had and not quite as much of a rise but we felt it would be a good reach position for my husband. It was just a matter of waiting for it to turn up in the post which seemed to take forever. Stuck with all the Christmas post I guess. In the meantime we also purchased a set of dia-compe SS5 levers. This time from the UK but there weren’t many about and were fairly pricey. I also bought a Turbo world championship saddle in good condition as neither of us were quite sure about the gel version I’d previously bought. The levers and saddle arrived quickly but the bars and stem only arrived on the day our daughter broke up from nursery for Christmas. We did manage to fit the bars, stem and saddle and cable up the brakes a couple of nights ago and I got a few photos this morning whilst it was sunny. Hopefully we will get some time in the evenings to finish it off before consuming too much food and alcohol over Christmas.

Pleased with how it’s looking so far and can’t wait to see it being ridden again.

Finally finished. Christmas has come early. Not exactly a shakedown ride but took it out to the local park for some photos. A middle-aged woman with her winter coat on riding vintage mountain bike around the skate park thankfully it was pretty quiet on Christmas Eve morning with no one to laugh at me. All the skate kids must be out doing their last-minute Christmas shopping. Anyway, I think this bike steers better than any other I’ve ridden. It handles like a dream.

A bit of tweaking will be required as the headset loosened off a bit, but overall it feels amazing my husband‘s face when riding the bike looked like a kids at Christmas.

Great job!
Really good to see this being brought back to life.
Do you have a washer on your headset? Can’t tell from the photos but it looks like there isn’t one? Could be why the headset is not staying tight?
