Oh and look at the stem, specialized had a thing about using 135-150mm stems on everything, I can remember the big box of specialized stems that we had to swap off every bike, even the nice Ti ones just sat there 'cos they were too long...

I always use a long stem dunno why, probably after 20 years of using one a stumpy little bugger just doesn't feel right.
Yup I'd say '97 too.

I second 1997. M2 metal matric was about then I think the Manitou (XS?) forks might even be 1996. They were certainly available in 1997 because thats when I bought mine new.
