Campagnolo bottom bracket woes - help needed

The Mavic spacers used to put a 10 speed cassette on an 11 hub are 1.2-1.7mm might be a better fit. Cheap as chips online

I visited my LBS for those spacers a few times, but those trips turned out to be quite expensive.

Beside the spacer, I came home with an old bike they'd traded in every time ... The spacers were free, though.

Just make sure ball cage bearings are set from the right side. If twisted, that adds some space . Stupid but happened to me.

Pre 1977 (pre CPSC) cranks have a bigger bulge on the rear of the crank where the square drive hole is. Tge cranks have either just “PATENT” on the back side or with a diamond and a number. Post 1977 cranks (post CPSC) have a smaller bulge at the back of the crank and will have a date code in diamond circle or square.

Pre CPSC cranks work with thin cup (not riffled) cups and will have an axle marked 68-SS-120 for BSC or 70-SS-120 for Italian. Both are 113mm

Post CPSC cranks work with thick cup (rifled cups) and will have an axle marked 68-SS for BSC and 70-SS for Italian. Both are 115mm

Pista are marked 68 or 70SP

It is essential to couple the correct cups, spindle and crank. A post CPSC (1977) won’t work with a 68/70-SS-120 axle. A post 77 crank needs a 115mm axle and thick rifled cups.

Unless you're desperate for originality, you can use loose balls

The cage is purely for ease of assembly.
It takes a minute or so extra to fit loose balls.

I would never use a cage in one of my own bikes as I've seen the damage it does if it disintegrates.

An incorrect cage could damage the cup.
