Stripping down my peugeot pkn10 and I've come across a slight problem.

The nipple for the gear cable is seized in the shifter.

I've tried soaking it in penetrating fluid. Twisting the cable. Cutting cable down and knocking end to try shock it free.

Read about heating and cooling several times, or drilling nipple out.
What have you guys found out to be the best way ?

Drilling is a nightmare as the steel cable centre is harder than the nipple and the alloy if the lever. You would need a rigid stand and a drill press thingy. Have you go it a soldering iron?

O.k I'll give drilling a miss.Lil

Yeah I've got a soldering iron.....presume from that if I heat nipple or cable up enough wire will come free and I can use a pin from rear side to push out. What is the nipple made from?

Cut cable down as far as possible, then with a very small drift old screw driver, tape out the nipple.

The nipple is aluminium as well, so they have siezed together with aluminum oxide. There's a few acids that will eat aluminum oxide but I'm guessing you don't have any sulfuric to hand :) It could be worth giving it a soak in coke cola which is mildly acidic

Re:

Ammonia is the one for dissolving aluminium oxide, most people use drain cleaner, this would need to be used diluted to avoid dissolving ANY of the aluminium, you only want to affect the surface oxidation enough to drift out the nipple.

Re:

Use the first picture as a reference. Could you not slide a pointed screw driver along the cable guide slot into the nipple and lever the nipple out?
