Braking issues

Re:

Cheers all!!

Those Suntour canti's look heavy duty like they could stop a bus. Do you have a model number so i can search them. Saw some nice Avid ones in on Chain reaction website but they were £80 i think each if they suited the bike. Would be nice for my Fisher but over kill on this Marin.

Currently cleaning the rim as its been neglected will degrease with some brake cleaner at the end. The pads in it look like the £2.99 ebay specials. I can pull the lever as hard as I want and the bloody thing wont stop. Now the bike isn't massively heavy and nor am I.

I will definitely look at the video and get a set of the Richey pads and have a tweak of the set up.

The straddle wire is a 93 (if I am right). On the mounting boss one canti spring is set to the top and the other in the middle. Not sure if this is right. One Canti is lazy / sticky.

The bike was from a friend, basically I sold a newish Carrera I built myself in favour of getting two retro ones for me but to share with the wife. (Wanted a Kona Cinder Cone and a Specialised Hardrock like one I had years ago but plenty of time). My Gary Fisher I love the colour and when I can will do some bits to it. This Marin I want to go through it cleaning it bit by bit and getting it right then if I decide to paint the frame all it needs is a strip down and paint.

Where is the best place to get new bolts from? I've got some stainless in the shed but the head of the bolt is far to small.

Re:

Those heavy duty rear brakes are Suntour/Pedersen Self Energisers available from SJS Cycles for just £ 4.99 a pair ! They also have Shimano Altus cantilevers

at £ 17.99 a pair . So for not a lot of money you could have a complete set of new cantilevers ready for the new year . To refresh the brake surfaces I have found

that abrasive rubber blocks, available in various grades ( Amazon ) , are really useful . I get all my bolts/nuts/washers on ebay , as long as you can identify

your exact needs ie thread size x length x head type and quantity you can't go wrong , and you may as well go stainless steel while your at it

That sounds extreme. It sounds very like there might multiple issues including a cable issue - check that that the cables are not seized in the outers and that the inners are not breaking up and jamming - or are made of cheese. And check levers are doing something weird. Basically strip down the brakes and get everything running properly - and maybe buy some new stainless inners and outers of decent quality - Shimano, Fibrax etc. Lube them with GT85 when assembling so that moisture doesn’t get stuck inside.

The levers are worn and the outer cable for the front could be shorter so that it came out of the lever nicer. I will definitely replace the cables as I go as i'm guessing its all really old. Currently its just about getting the best out of what is there. When i'm more sorted I will look for better parts and see what to do with it.

I cant seem to find stainless bolts with a big enough head. (Diameter). Will look again.

Anyone here know about Marin? Should the whole frame be painted in the bright yellow and then the matt black over the top? Also what was the original tyre size, guessing 26x1.95?

Re:

Marin paint type and colour changed each year..

For 1992. That's correct that the flourescent colour was put on first.

Hence if you scratch the black you get the yellow coming through.

I'm fairly sure that some type of clear coat was finally applied. Not always detectable as these bikes are getting old now.

Re:

Ahh cheers, See in the catalogue that the are painted two ways, is that an error or an option? Mine has black forks and yellow triangle and stem, one pic in catalogue has black frame, yellow stem and forks.

Re:

My ownership and fanaticism of marin since c. 1992 has shown me all sorts of variations. Where the fork decals are down the side. Yuk! Large font too, or more commonly down the front...better.

Just work with what you have.

Do you have this....

The vast majority of bikes bought in uk has a yeller rear triangle.

Certain USA and other euro countries got dealt the other one.

The difference actually appears in the dogalogue.

Re:

Yep mine is the yellow rear triangle. Pretty standard apart from the saddle and grips. Grips are easy to find something close but the saddle i don't see many. Its a very fast bike compared to my Gary Fisher and feels light enough. Just going to tinker with it and make it a nice ride.

Do you know the best colours match to refinish it with?
Also where can i get the correct c clip for the stem roller? Mine is missing think someone tried to take it apart as the mounting arms are bent.

Re:

Yep, the saddles were comfy until they got ripped and thrown away, probably somewhere between between 92 and 94...they were budget.

Circlips...erm maybe a d.i.y store. Unless a donor stem can be found.

Colours. Let me tell you, a satin black touch up may suffice the black bits.

The flouro? Any attempt will look naff. It's a undiscovered paint code thing.

Maybe some stickers over worst bits
