Wow a bit of cable adjustment oh no how terrible. They always get great reviews. Plus you can actually modulate the power rather than just off or on!
Endless faffing with cables you mean, every ride, half way through a (long) ride and so on? And which hydraulics have you used with worse modulation than BB7s  ? Only ones i can think of are antique hayes. Anything half way decent hydraulic (Deore upwards) these days knocks BB7s completely out of the running. Just a shame we couldn't get hydraulics for my wifes cross bike, having to slum it with BB7 Road........

Yet they are favoured for trials because of the modulation...
Well i rode my brothers bike the other day with avid something or others from 09 and they were really bitey.

Go with discs, for xc racing you'll notice the difference over V's and its reassuring to know you have the power to stop on a dime whenever you need to.

Go for hydraulics, pretty much fit & forget, the M970 ones should be good.

Re:

On reflection you are right Jim,Im going to go disc.Another big advantage is it obviously makes my suspension fork options far better.Hopefully the guy still has his old M970 set..
