St Peter's, Hope, Derbyshire. Here you not only get a fine 14th century church, you also get part of an Anglo-Saxon (Mercian, even?) cross.





The gargoyles are also rather good.

St Mary and All Saints, Fotheringhay
2nd Duke of York is buried here.
Mary, Queen of Scots was executed just over the lane at the castle by the river Nene.

And not so far away, St Leonard’s in Apethorpe. Bit less grand.


Tried to sticky beak at Apethorpe Palace but you can’t really get a good shot.

St Nicholas, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. In my opinion the roads round here aren’t often up to much (I’m allowed to say that because I was born here), but we are spoilt for choice when it comes to nice old churches.

Churches large and small – St Mary de Haura Church, Shoreham-by-Sea, and St Botolph's Church, Botolphs, both in West Sussex. I could just about fit this much of St Mary's in a photo; for a parish church it's about as big as it gets I would think. It actually used to be even bigger until the 1700s when the nave collapsed. It's always nice to see a flying buttress (of which these are quite early examples, apparently).

St Botolph's on the other hand is pretty tiny and is in what is now not even a hamlet, let alone a village.
