Big MTB brands as I remember them

What happened to Diamond Back?

A friend had an Axis in the 90's and it was blooming brilliant. Plus they did some high end ti if memory serves. Didn't Nick Craig ride for them at some point?

Not seen anything from them in a long time...

BITD (1992) i had an AXIS XT, it was awesome, had like a Purple/Black/Blue tortishell effect frame, Bhrama Bars (Spelt Badly) ;) Sadly in 1998 it was stolen from my locked shed and never recovered, Insurance paid up with a new for old policy, and gave me an option of a Univega or Kona Condercone. I took the Cindercone and despite the loss of my DB Axis, i continued to Ride with a big grin on my face. I still have the Cindercone and still love riding it today.

:)

maybe we should make a "had it---lost it" list.

yeah, that does sum it upo quite well.

IIRC, the early Wheelbase catologues were chocka with was it Ridgebacks?, if so then that is another brand.

In the early 90's everyone round our way was riding Orange, Specialized, Marin, Alpinestars, and Saracen. Probably just what the local shops stocked tbh. GT's were talked about but you didn't see many.

Now there's still loads of Orange's (Local pride? Or the fact that they're ace ;) ), Marin, Trek, Lapierre, Specialized and some Kona + Santa Cruz. Also quite a few of those new brands that I can't remember.

Coming from the Souff I didn't even see an Orange untill I went up Norff to a Polaris in the Cheviots, in about '97 I think. There we were squaded up with masses of riders in black with orange spots. It certainly made us take notice. Come to think of it I saw my first Pace [frame and forks] there too. Specialised, Kona, Marin and GT seemed to have the market in the South if I remember right.

I know everyone throws the term BSO around but IMHO the low end stuff from the likes of Specialized, Trek, Saracen, GT... etc I would say are still ok bikes for the price and a lot better than the likes of Apollo or the crap in the supermarkets.

Anyway that said by far the biggest fall from grace I would say is Muddy Fox. I can only guess some venture capital co has bought the name and put on some supermarket £50 bikes but is charging £120 cos it's a name people have heard of. Saw them at Sports Direct, 1 bit of Shimano and a load of shit components.

there should be a split in definition with low end stuff.

I built an old claud butler frame up with a lot of shimano tourney parts for one of the lads at work, its been running for 12 months flawlessly, just the odd brake tweek as the pads have worn down & about a dozen new tubes. I would probably class it as either a low-end or an entry level MTB.

a lot of the same parts sit on a heavier frame in my garage (a triumph something or other that the missus rides... 'designed by raleigh' according to the decals) but I wouldn't quite class it as a bso as it is clearly better than the cheap supermarket stuff but it certainly isn't what I would describe as a low end or entry level MTB. I keep urging her to let me sell it & build her something half decent but for the amount she uses it, anything more would be a waste of cash.

is there such a thing as a boutique BSO?!
