For me it has to be the Schwinn Homegrown from the mid-late 90s. I've read on other forums people swear by these as the best bike they've ever ridden, though I've not ridden one myself. They just look "right"; racey and well-specced (XTR group, Sid Forks, Titanium bars, stem, post) Easton frame, plus well-balanced and under 21lbs.

So, what would say is the best production hardtail of the 1990's in your opinion?

That bike is a 98 Factory, and was made by yeti, so its not surprising people swear buy them. I have a regular 98 homegrown, not made by yeti and its an amazing ride, so I can imagine the yeti made models are all the better.

I've been looking for the bassboat blue 98 factory model for a while now, but no luck yet.

Re:

+1 on the Schwinn Homegrown specially the Team issue. I have a '99 Team Issue and a 2001 Team Issue. Brilliant Hardtails, light as hell. The '99 was still made by Yeti. The 2001 might be the lightest aluminum frame out there (not a huge fan of the proprietary ICBM headset though). I have other bikes, but in terms of pure performance the Homegrowns take the cake.

Re:

Them bikes are way too modern. You can't start a post in the pre 97 proper retro section with 1998 Aluminium trash ;-)

The best ones are the ones I have, out if them so far it's the 91 Altitude since it always rides just right. Not exactly mass production, but it is featured as available in the catalogue.

That homegrown does look super, but all Schwinn's of that era seemed to have that little special something IMHO.
The best HT overall, well, that is a big net to cast. I'd could think of quite a few that you would willingly sell a bodypart.

I'd think any higher grade MTB frame of the 90's would be great to ride, just 'different' to the next one. I'd love to have the option to ride quite a few more retro HT's to compare

At this point my Xizang would be the winner in my stable as a far as fun, speed, comfort and lightness is concerned.

Re:

Gt zaskar !! The zaskar seems to win every iconic magazine related 'best of'. I have a 91 zaskar so I can say its a nice ride too.

my personal favourite is the khs montana team 1991 deep blue with hot pink seatbtube.
My 2c
