Best Canti's?

Don't know about / never had straddle rods :-( if we persume the cables dont actually stretch under braking, I can't see any advantage (other than they look cool ) and you actually loose the ability to mess about with hanger height ?

Any how, wide canti's and a low hanger :

We could do with a similar frontal shot of a low profile setup for comparison :D

Setup

A couple of posters mentioned setup...

Apart from

- frame/fork flex (stealing power, feeling spongy at the lever),
- canti arm length and levers used (mechanical advantage)
- And pads/rims (ability of one material to grab the other)

It's all set up - I wouldn't blame (or praise) the brakes straight off without looking at the rest of the picture

My Saracen thread in my sig contains my canti setup method which takes minutes

I also happen to rate the standard Shimano pads pretty highly

I have to say apart from plastic brakes, XT,DX,LX,STX/Suntour/Dia Compe they are ALL just fine as long as all the other variables are addressed

you are all weird - cantis are all in the set up regardless of bling factor.

Yes you're quite right, the design of the lever and the quality of the materials used has no bearing whatsoever on the brakes operation.

Yes, of course, buy the most expensive, never bother to actually learn how to set them up so they actually work. Then post on internet forums for years afterwards how terrible cantis are.

Unless, like Russell, your brake levers are plastic, just about all cantilever brakes in their multitude of forms and design can be made to work more than adequately for everyday use. The irritating part is that it takes time to get it right and results can be rubbish, simply putting most people off.

Give it a rest.

My point, if you'd have bothered to read it properly and as illustrated by Sheldons excellent site (and who the hell are you to argue with him?) is that even when perfectly set up, some cantilevers work better than others. Usually, the better ones are the more expensive ones. My personal experience is that once I've spent the time to perfectly set up my brakes, I've had the best results with M900.

Plastic levers... moi? You don't know me. Why get so personal with all your responses? Totally unneccesary.

lgf pushes someone to breaking point then trys to make out he was joking...I have been there with him too russell...he just cant afford quality and feels the need to slate anyone who can....

Come on gents, this could be an interesting thread and it's going to turn to shit if were not careful :-(
