Best Canti's?

The SE rears are excellent (and at sjs discounted price - if any left - braking bargain of all time). Wide angle much better than "compact" - Dia Compe/Suntour XCEs etc really quite good. Late '90s XTs (don't know model no.) on my tourer a very close second.

Vs better though IMO/E.

of course v's are better , but its retro bike so thats not the point
straddle rods anyone ?

Not that anyone here ever shows any interest in the technical side of things anymore, but low profile cantilevers have a higher potential mechanical advantage than wider ones. More 'power' at the rim for the same effort at the brake lever.

Better heel clearance on smaller frames was a secondary benefit.

Thought low profile cantis were to stop your feet hitting the rear brake and not for the trees :?

on elevateds this was a problem , but not on the saftey frame

I am interested and posted the comment above :D

I have wide with a low hanger (can post pics for discussion purposes), how does this compare in power and feel to a low profile set up ? (I have never had LP) :?

WD :D

Its been 20 years since I studied this stuff so rather than possibly tell you a load of porkies, I'll point you in the direction of Sheldon Brown...

http://sheldonbrown.com/cantilever-geometry.html

He does a much better job explaining it than I would be able to, and there are pictures :)

**actually, just scanned through it myself and seems that the best cantis are somewhere between wide and lo-profile and that the main benefit of lo pro is in fact heel clearance... shows what I know!**
