Best 90's rim and did the UK ever make a good one?

I've got some old FIR rims that have a lip around them for that, when I first picked them up I thought they were really worn

.. of the 231 era and before my favorite rim (having had Campag's, Mavic's, and some others) where Araya 395-Teams.
Properly eyeletted, strong, light, silver and look good.

they also used the curved surface idea which was to create even wear on the brake pad and when the pads wore down they where not pusing on a slight angle.
Excellent surface for braking on also.
Old style wide profile pads (of the turn of the 90's late 80's could be a problem as they would have to bed in to the curve.
Quick run through mud though sorted that out, as it still does on today modenr rims

Worst rims have to be 230 TIB followed by 231CD's
230's though a good rim don't last long, cheap though, the TIB anodising means you had to get though the anodising to get proper braking.
231CD as you had to get through the anodising to get them to a decent braking surface.

I must say, Silver spokes/nipples with 231CD and decent amber wall tyres (Rip/Rail Smoke/Dart sort of colouring) gives the smartest and classiest look to a wheel I can think of.
just a shame you had to remove teh ano it to make them work decently.

I will say I never used Ceramic rims as I couldn't justify the cost BiTD

They were worth the extra in my opinion, they didn't wear down as quick and stopped far better in the rain, which I suppose was the point.

What US rims are worth a look? and who made the Phatso for X-lite? I've got a couple of pairs of those, they're pretty bomb proof probably not right for the build I have in mind though.

Mavic MA40

+1

mine lasted ages, looked smart (like the 231CD), were lighter (I think?), but could be a bugger to get some tyres on/off iirc.

Id say in second half of 90ties
Mavic 217 was like a golden standard.
Everything else was measured against that rim.
Outside mavic it was SUN CR17A
thats how i remember it

Fir Impes for me. That extra rim gave an extra edge to aim the brake block on. Trouble was it made the rim soo stiff they needed washers behind the nipples to prevent them cracking around the spoke holes. Rear cracked but front was spot on true fives years after Merlin built them, snowflaked as well. Don't know how long they lasted beyond that as bike was knicked.

Still my favourite as they weren't Mavic and I don't like to conform

Communal garden Mavic 321's and Im still running them

 what's a shared garden got to do with it? and on the rim choice I thought that was a modern disk rim bud? Was there a retro version?
