Best 90's rim and did the UK ever make a good one?

As above what do you recon was the best 90's rim, my ravourite was the Mavic 231 ceramic but I was (and still am) a weight weenie! And I obviously didn't try every rims so what do you recon?

Also did the UK ever make a good one? I want to do a patriot build next year only using UK and US parts, so did we make a good one in the UK or will it have to be a Yank part?

Best 90s rim IMHO is Mavic 217 SUP CD or Ceramic. All the ones that came afterwards were excessively lightened and with the improvements in brakes, would wear through the braking surfaces quicker than earlier versions. The 217 is significantly stronger and stiffer than 231s but still pretty damn lightweight.

No such thing as a UK rim AFAIK - unless you count some of the badged-up stuff by X-lite and Halo. AFAIK most Yank rims were made by the likes of Weinmann anyway.

And Patriot build with US parts? What's this - the 51st State?

Sun Metal made their rims in house during the boom years. Production went to Asia around the turn of the millenium, as far as I know.

It's true that Bontrager, Syncros and others had their rims made by Weinmann, but before the 1999 explosion that put the US Weinmann factory out of action, many would have been made in Olney, Illinois.

No it's just I couldn't think of any gearing or tyres that were made in the UK and the yanks are our best muckers after all!

231's back in in the day. a fan of campag stenho now. very light, strong and people tell you they are no good anymore because they are concave

sorry, i didnt finish before posting!" yes they were made concave. think it was a gimmic supposed to stop brake pads hitting the tyres or dropping into the spokes
