Back from The Edge

Hi
How was it removing the BB - did it put up a fight? Did you need a 4 pin tool?Asking as I have one of these zero BB’s in my edge frame that has just arrived. Bit nervous after reading this https://velocipede.co.uk/bike-parts...-components-hardcore-titanium-bottom-bracket/

Sam took the bb out, said it was no problem. its unlikely he could find the 4pin tool but probably used 2x pin spanners.
The mounting holes were already a little damaged so no need here for special levels of care.

You can also make something up, and bolt something over the tool using the axle and bolt, to stop the tool slipping out under torque.

I don't think heat will be of massive assistance, iirc aluminium expands more than ti, although the change in temperature can break a bond.

The thread on one cup is a little damaged, but could be dressed up.👍
Given how rare a zero bb is, it's interesting they are on this pair of edges. Is it possible that dawes distribution also offered zero?

Well hopefully it’s a good sign that yours came out okay 🤞even without the right tool. I might try and pick up a couple of park tool pin spanners next week. Otherwise it’s off to the bike shop for help. Probably be easier to fit a cartridge bb if and when it comes out.

Get a pin spanner where the pins are close in size to the bb cup tool holes.
You might even find that an angle grinder pin spanner is a better fit.

Park pin spanners are no better than any other quality brand, but cost more.
2 pin spanners will double your chances👍

This was exactly my concern having just bought it from a photo - the app had been ripped off, and a boss crudely attached with a nut and bolt😬
Luckily not. It looks original.

As for a mod,:
It's slightly harder to think why you'd remove the triple cable stop, source another one to match (rather than modify the one you already have), then braze a gear boss on there...

But only slightly.

Of course when dawes still made bikes in , they might well have knocked up some pre- production models to see how the market or management took to them.

A toptube gear boss is not an original idea in 1993 -
As @Rod_Saetan pointed out earlier.
Top tube gear bosses seem to have been a Dawes thing - pic stolen from this forum, on a 653 synthesis. Not entirely sure of why, but I think it's cool anyway.
