Back from The Edge

The toptube gear boss is brazed on under the dawes greenyblue flecked paint.

The double cable stop is exactly that, but matching the style of the rear triple, which is as per catalogue.
I was wondering if there was a standard gear lever mount under there or if someone had screwed it into the tube :)

I guess at some point you will strip it down and be able to see inside the bottom bracket shell or steerer to see if the paint is all original.

I really have never seen another Edge like it

This was exactly my concern having just bought it from a photo - the app had been ripped off, and a boss crudely attached with a nut and bolt😬
Luckily not. It looks original.

As for a mod,:
It's slightly harder to think why you'd remove the triple cable stop, source another one to match (rather than modify the one you already have), then braze a gear boss on there...

But only slightly.

Of course when dawes still made bikes in , they might well have knocked up some pre- production models to see how the market or management took to them.

A toptube gear boss is not an original idea in 1993 -
As @Rod_Saetan pointed out earlier.

There was a special edition dawes mountain bike made from 501 and painted in a crazy green and purple spotted paint scheme with stx kit on it at some point in time that I don't think was ever in the catalogues. They had numbers in a similar position. Could you have a non catalogue limited edition bike there? Or even a team race bike?

EDIT - link to example of special edition numbering https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/stx-special-edition-cantis-£13-posted.204841/

There is a Dawes "Zig Zag" for sale at the moment which sounds like the bike you mean?

@bikeworkshop Looking forward to more 'Edge updates, and, randomly, I've visited that church at Hoarwithy a few years ago on my holidays - very cool.

Not that one, it was actually called the Special Edition, with a green/purple paint scheme:

That paint scheme was also used on a road bike, but I think I've onlt seen a catalogue shot of one.
