Anti-theft parts bin sh*tter.

I'm so looking forward to having a bike that I'm not going to be worrying about every time I leave it locked up. I'll still be pissed off it does get nicked, but nowhere near as much as with my other rides, which will just be used for recreational rides.

It's a shame how bad we have let this country become. Of course there were always thieves, but crime was once at low enough levels so that most were investigated. Now the police just outright say that they don't bother about bike theft. And it's not just locked up bikes that are at risk, there have been several incidents recently where cyclists have been stopped by urban youths on an e-scooter and told to give up their bike at knifepoint.

We're approaching the stage where simply going for a nice ride on a well loved bike becomes a risky endeavor.
This is how much the police care;

My go-to town bike is a 26"er city bike, frame from the '60s (gaspipe special edition) saved from the attic of my parents by yours truly at age of 12, thirtysomething years ago. I had it powercoated recently, built from carefully selected parts, and here we go with an unassuming lookin' lightweight weapon (under 11 kg with fenders,) 1x1 speed, never having a second glimpse from anyone.

I even toyed with the idea to swap every part for titanium where possible because fook yeah, but the rig is rather nice to ride as is already, so this can wait.

My 3 kids finally reached their human peak of evolution as we know of - 26" MTBs are no longer too big for them.

So I started building bikes for them from the parts bin but being the snobbish bastard I decided to spoil & imprint them with the feel of the fine steel of yesteryear. So far 2 Tange Prestige framed (Schwinn PDG50) bikes are built, another steel one on its way. Luckily no ones gives a shite about old steel bikes around here (rural hungary) as people can't tell their real value.

As the kids start appreciating real value of classic mtbs (hopefully), my titanium collection will be donated to them as well. I can only hope they will look after them as enthusiastically as I did so far.

In 2023 85000+ bicycles were reported stolen in the Netherlands. I know that more will have been stolen than that, but there is no way of knowing how many really. At 22 million bicycles in total, a million bicycles stolen every year would be almost 5% of the whole amount. They would have to run a tight business to get that number. 😆

I think so many bicycles are stolen because they are an easy target and still hold value second hand.

Those are big numbers: are people reporting bikes stolen when they haven’t been? (Eg Dad buys student offspring a bike. Student rides bike and then leaves it outside a bar, can’t remember where, but claims on insurance.) Have no idea if this is even a thing, but even with faceoffbook there doesn’t seem to be a market in old bikes big enough to support that much theft?
