My brother lives on his 45' yacht but it rarely gets out to sea because it's not a good idea to go solo and getting enough folk coordinated is never simple. (He's got plenty deep water sailing experience - more than most because he got sunk halfway across the Indian Ocean on a yacht delivery :) ).

If you must, I reckon 35' is the sweet spot. Small enough for single handed, but big enough to take passengers without tripping over them.

Lovely idea though and it looks like a great yacht - probably nice thick Dutch steel.
 
This is the thing. I wasnt looking to sail and tbh on that front im current champion on the Scottish series regatta for being seasick while becalmed.
Entire fleet around us and the only thing to be heard is BAAGGGGHHH of me over the side. We won a lot so it was lots of Bombay gin on the go :oops:
I hate it and really hate blue water deliveries. I was seeing it as a project for living in.
I would look to wire it and put in place everything that a later owner would instal, in the way of new sails or nav elec' instruments .Rigging, replacement of masts. Truth is people especially us blokes love a project.
I can stamp a truly custom interior, being a cabinetmaker, with his own machinery. And with no timescale under three years it can really go to work on the inside.
Then sell on to the next owner keen for a blue water cruiser, of note and fitted to match and as a project for him to complete
Much refitting, is of this type and size, is done by pros anyway, and the owners part is to pay the bills. Of this owning this size you arent going to be short a bob or two and will expect bills that would include new masts and rigging, new sails. a new coat on the topsides in his wife's fav colour but a couple of grand on each mast(that i have zero intention of replacing) he's more likely to feel that hes part of the project, and tbh owners love the tidy ,paint and polish bit of maintaining.

Ah, that's different.

I still dream of that and have tried to persuade my wife that now we have disposed of the kids we could do that. But she compares me to Capt Bligh - all based on my language when I had her at the helm when we were in the tail end of a cyclone on a lee shore and I was trying to reef the main sail, legs wrapped around the mainmast and the boat getting laid flat every other wave. She hasn't been out with me on a boat since. :)

For live aboard a Dutch Barge or the like is where it's at IMO. Much more stable at anchor, less draught so more mooring choices, and a frugal engine. But best of all, more room than most small cottages. I'd go to 60' on one of those.

:LOL: I do this every couple of years, take a look at Apollo duck and the likes, and theres been several nice albeit smaller boats. Even on that looked like a miniature waverly, (steam) with the red striped funnel

Narrowboats are just that, i couldnt live on one. :? Wide beam, then youre limited to where you can put it or take it, which leaves cabin cruiser. Oh how many rum totters have met their end in attic cruisers, without even the respect of the boathands :LOL: Sorry, a wee paraphrase there. OR sailing craft.
Usual smelly plastic sloops,prone to the unimaginable horror called osmosis are two a penny but tried living in one ? :shock: Stir crazy :shock: Racing for a week is bad.
Big GRP is Big Money, even projects of 36'+ can still be £300/foot and then theres the beam, most are 14' ,the one above 12' Kind of in the middle.
Dutch narrow as big yacht in steel for 5 grand. Go anywhere through any canal to anywhere else. Sorry :oops: But i look a lot and this doesnt really come alone too often and if it does its plastic or wood but never steel.
Things always go wrong in a blow and from my own experiences- Check all reefing set up before putting to sea.

Be surprised for how little you can buy a small wooden dingy Rob. Any of our many Lochs, a wee boom tent and its certainly easier to stop for the night and be about set up than the tent business. Or bring one and camp on a remote shore for a week cooking fire.

What types were they ?

A wee gunter rigged boat with a drop keel, clinker built and a vintage Johnson Seagull (a loved that boat) then there was the International Dragon racing yacht, looked like a dart, no engine at all, fin keel, carvel construction, that was a short lived ownership.
