Ammonia for stuck seatpost

Indeed ammonia and sodium hydroxide are different chemicals but they are both alkalis and will dissolve aluminium. As a chemist I would indeed choose the latter over ammonia because it is a much stonger alkali and will work much faster, another advantage is that it has a low odour.

I've seen Caustic Soda eating away at an alloy seat post in a steel frame. Eats into it, a layer at a time, making a right mess. My father-in-law is kindly removing a post out of a '94 Cinder Cone for me, using this method.

Post stuck in an alloy frame? Caustic Sode/Ammonia will destroy the post and the frame...

If there's still enough post left, i'd clamp it in a vice (a proper vice, preferably on a bench bolted to the floor). The work it slowly backwards and forwards, this has worked for me quite a few times.

Good luck.
